Song Lyrics: “Man’s Best Friend”

March 14, 2012

"Cheers!"

This is a bit of an old ‘Chestnut’ from 2004, back in the days I was co-writing songs with my old chum, Richard Eyre, for The Laddz project. I’ve been doing a bit of tidying up before my Euro-trip back home and amazingly found these lyrics stuck inbetween some other stuff…! Just thought I’d share them… BE WARNED though, they are a bit ‘laddy’, even chauvanistic, but it’s all meant in good, old fashioned, British fun… (btw. just in case you don’t know, the term ‘fag’ refers to a cigarette!)

“Man’s Best Friend” (lyrics by Anthony Donnelly)

I like drinking every now and then

‘Cos lager is a man’s best friend

It don’t talk back, it gets you high,

It don’t bleed and it don’t cry.

Drinking is the spice of life

Freedom from the ‘trouble and strife’

Babe, this isn’t escap-ism

It’s a break away from this bloody prison.

You get a bag on when I drink,

But you don’t ever stop and think,

If I hadn’t been drinking on that night,

You’d have looked a proper sight!

I like drinking every now and then

‘Cos lager is a man’s best friend

It don’t talk back, it gets you high,

It don’t bleed and it don’t cry.

Guys like drinking – it’s our past time,

So don’t go treatin’ it like some crime.

Men have drunk beer through the ages,

Kings and Popes, and bloody sages!

Why don’t females understand,

Drinking’s just a Right of Man.

We’re into boozing, sports and fags,

Not nail-polish, knittin’, and Tampax!

I like drinking every now and then

‘Cos lager is a man’s best friend

It don’t talk back, it gets you high,

It don’t bleed and it don’t cry.

Lager is a Man’s best friend,

We’ll keep on drinking to the end.

Lager is a Man’s best friend,

We’ll keep on drinking to the end…

(c) 2004, Anthony Donnelly

PS – If there’s anybody out there that fancies putting it to music, I’m open to suggestions and collaboration and still have some contacts in the music industry… Drop me a line!
